WHAT IS Bookwidgets?
BookWidgets allows teachers to create interactive lessons and easily share them with their students, by providing digital templates for all kinds of interactive exercises. Teachers just have to add their own content and choose between more than 40 different widgets or exercise templates to engage students. This enables teachers to create adapted crossword riddles, jigsaw puzzles, web quests, automatically graded quizzes, timelines and much more.
TEST CASE with VRT KLAAR
By combining VRT KLAAR content and Bookwidgets assignments we don’t just give students and teachers a new way to learn and teach. We also made sure the content fits perfectly with what is being taught in the classroom. To test our case we used VRT KLAAR content, made embeddable by het Archief voor Onderwijs, to produce specialised interactive assignments. Teachers used these assignments in a classroom setting. During this proces we held 6 surveys and got an estimate of 320 responses (from 195 teachers). By spreading our surveys through the Het Archief voor Onderwijs newsletter and Smartschool we were able to reach and recruit a big group of teachers.
One of the most important discoveries is what the teachers thought about the enriched media content. The most positive responses came from a younger group of teachers (aged between 25-34), they gave the experience with KLAAR and Bookwidgets an 8,4/10 average. The format was least popular with the older teachers (55-64 years old) they gave an average rating of 8,1/10.
Apart from average rating, about 71% of teachers said they would use the assignments and videos again. They also noted that KLAAR content in combination with Bookwidgets assignments will mostly be used as a way to either explain the curriculum, test the students or as an alternative introduction into a subject matter. The element that leaves the most room for improvement is the way the assignments and videos fit into the learning objectives, creating these interactive assignments and integrating them in the learning objectives takes pedagogical and didactic skills.
The assignments created in this test case were eagerly used by all, and an average of 1 out of 7 teachers would use Bookwidgets and KLAAR content to create additional classes and exercises. Because of Het Archief van Onderwijs we were able to make KLAAR content embeddable in the Bookwidgets app, making it much easier for teachers to create their own assignments and quizzes using VRT videos.
LEARNINGS
Generally the exercises combined with KLAAR content were really well received. The way the exercises and videos complimented each other was also praised. We learned that teachers like to use KLAAR as a way to test their students.
The integration of KLAAR videos in the Bookwidgets app that was provided by Het Archief van Onderwijs doesn’t just create a better user experience, it also helps spread the content that VRT produces and encourages teachers to make additional lessons.
The three partners worked hard to shape the project, they worked together to decided what they wanted to achieve, how they could measure the results and, how they could construct a successful pilot project in a short amount of time. This project has inspired teachers to get to work and create their own classes using Bookwidgets and VRT content. The process was made easier by the embedding Het Archief voor Onderwijs provided!
